Chrono Trigger would have made my eight-year-old me cry with joy. It combines everything I loved back in my younger days: the classic JRPG stylings of Squaresoft, the pitch-perfect music of Nobuo Uematsu, and the art of every adolescent’s favorite cartoonist, Akira Toriyama. Had I been aware that there was an RPG that looked like Dragonball, I would have murdered someone to get a hold of a copy.
However, I missed it completely. I have no idea how I managed to get through the 16-bit generation without having even heard of what many consider to be the pinnacle of Japanese game design, but I did. Luckily for me, Square-Enix has given me the chance to repent by re-packaging and re-releasing pretty much every game they’ve ever released (in lieu of making good new games, The World Ends With You notwithstanding), and I was delighted to find Chrono Trigger on my doorstep last week.
My impressions thus far? It’s good. It’s real good. And it sure makes riding the Muni a hell of a lot more enjoyable.
